Discussion:
Using Boolean Operators in Searches

Problem: Other than searching for single words or using the "Exact Phrase Match," I can't get the searches of documents to return the proper results, and have years of experiencing in searching with boolean operators. "AND" is treated as an "OR". Other boolean logic operators do not work properly either. Have tried every known presentation plus some new ones. Has anyone else encountered this problem and/or solved it?

Details: Running Adobe Acrobat Professional 6.0 (downloaded 30-day trial version from Adobe on 4/26/04) on Windows XP Pro. Search of between 20,000 to 50,000 pages of documents contained in about 4-10 files (about 1 Gb total). Searches of single words and "Exact Phrase Match" work fine. When using boolean logic operators, search was set for a boolean search. Files were indexed using the same software, Adobe Acrobat Pro 6.0. Since "AND" is treated as "OR", results sets are MUCH larger than they should be. 512Mb RAM. More than 15 Gb unused disk space.

"Files were indexed using the same software"
Did You index the files with the free trial version?
Did you try to see if "OR" is treated as "AND"?

Searching @320,000 pages in @400 documents, I did three "AND" queries, each of which seemed to work successfully. I am on a Windows NT machine, using AA6 "Pro" (not an evaluation copy, but no patch); using an index created by Acrobat 4.05a, NOT the new Catalog. So, my tests indicate that the new Catalog might be the problem (since my AA6 "Pro" is using the old, yucky, inferior catalog, (which creates an index which gives correct returns,) to do the search & not an index created by the shiny new Lexdek Catalog).

Thank you for your responses.

Reply to GH, First Question: I did index the files using the Catalog command in the free trial version of Acrobat Professional 6.0.1, which is supposed to have all the functionality of the non-trial version. I found no limitations or lack of functionality in other areas.

Reply to GH, Second Question: I did use "OR" and it worked as "OR". I could not get any combination of operators or other parameters, logical or illogical, to perform the function of an "AND".

Reply to FW: I agree, the catalog feature in AA6.0.1 Pro could be the problem, but one would think someone at Adobe or elsewhere would have posted information on it, no? I have to imagine many others are using the catalog feature in it.

I am surprised by the lack of information in general on Adobe's customer support site. Any suggestions on where to go from here for insight? I've asked Adobe for information and told them I can't purchase the software until there is verification that the files can be indexed and searched properly using boolean operators, but I'm not sure Adobe cares about a single-unit sale. We'll see.
