PROBLEM: Error 1317 - Cannot install Full Acrobat 6 or alternatively, Acrobat Reader 6.01 after uninstalling Acrobat 5, Photoshop 7, InDesign 1.0 and reinstalling Adobe CS on different harddrive, due to space constraints on original installation drive.

Environment:
=============
1.0 GHz AMD Duron
512 MB RAM
Free Space:
C: 1.72 GB NTFS
D: 20.09 GB NTFS
Windows 2000 SP3 [Production Box]
Administrator privileges as user "Chris"

Previous successfully installed Adobe products under C:\Program Files\Adobe\..

Photoshop 7
InDesign 1.0
Acrobat 5

ISSUE: Tried to upgrade Acrobat 5 to 6, as well as install Adobe CS. Installation found insufficient space on C: drive for CS installation. [huh?]
FIX: Removed Photoshop 7, InDesign 1.0, and Acrobat 5. Then installed Adobe CS on secondary hardrive to D:\Apps\Adobe\..

Successfully installed to D:\Apps\Adobe:
=========================
Adobe Illustrator CS
Adobe InDesign CS
Adobe Photoshop CS

[almost done]

Big problem ahead of us now...

NEXT ISSUE: Attempted to install Adobe Acrobat 6 to D:\Apps\Adobe\..

Received Error 1317 at tail end of install.
"Error 1317: An error occurred while attempting to create the directory D:\Apps"

This makes no sense because the directory already existed. Many other applications are installed on the D: drive, including the previous three Adobe apps.

FIRST WORK AROUND: I then attempted to install Adobe Acrobat 6 to the original destination for Adobe programs on this box, namely C:\Program Files\Adobe\..

[there should be enough space for this app, at least]
ISSUE: Received Error 1317 at tail end of install.

"Error 1317: An error occurred while attempting to create the directory D:\Apps"

But wait, we were trying to install to the C: drive. [arrgh]

SECOND WORK AROUND: Give up on full-blown Acrobat for the moment and install just the Reader 6.01 to D: drive:

D:\Apps\Adobe\...

ISSUE: Received Error 1317 at tail end of install.
"Error 1317: An error occurred while attempting to create the directory D:\Apps"

THIRD WORK AROUND: I then tried to install Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.01 to C:\Program Files\Adobe\...

ISSUE: Again, received Error 1317 at tail end of install.
"Error 1317: An error occurred while attempting to create the directory D:\Apps"

[OMGWTF?]

Why is it still trying to install to the D: drive?

FOURTH WORKAROUND [seriously peeved]: Do a little housekeeping on the ole' Windows registry (interior monologue goes something like this, "Why oh why can't we go back to the good old days of one directory, one program, no installation routine with files spread out willy-nilly all over the hard drive...? Wait, cause I'm not on a Mac, and my 'dot-com' company won't use Linux. Duh.").

regedit
CTRL-F for "Acrobat"
Delete every key reference to Acrobat.
(12 minutes later)
Done.

ISSUE: After next attempted Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.01 installation, same error.

"Error 1317: An error occurred while attempting to create the directory D:\Apps"

FIFTH WORKAROUND: Kill references to previous successful installation of Adobe Acrobat 5 without hurting my current installation of Adobe CS applications.

Hopefully this will wipe out any "roadblocks" to the next attempt. I still have no earthly reason why this is so gosh-darn difficult, I mean, Adobe products are seriously mature, and Win 2000 is pretty good (I will never goto to XP).

Goto: C:\Documents and Settings\chris\Application Data\Adobe

Carefully go through all files attempting to kill Acrobat references [knowing full well this is probably not the issue, but being thorough none the less].

ISSUE: Yeah, what do you think?

"Error 1317: An error occurred while attempting to create the directory D:\Apps"

SIXTH TRY: Goto Adobe forum, where I find that user names are used for logging in, as opposed to email addies. Neat.

Find this:

1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt
2. At the DOS prompt, type the following commands:

cd "\Docu[tab]
[Note, press the Tab key instead of typing '[tab]'. This should expand to 'cd "Documents and Settings"'. Then press Enter.]
cacls "All Users" /T /E /C /G Administrators:F

The syntax for the command prompt was a little off, never have heard of using the Tab key in command.exe or cmd.exe, but finally figure out what this meant.

START - RUN - COMMAND.EXE
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft(R) Windows DOS
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-1999.

C:\DOCUME~1\CHRIS>
C:\DOCUME~1\CHRIS>cd..
C:\DOCUME~1\
C:\DOCUME~1\cacls "All Users" /T /E /C /G Administrators:F

(huge amount of re-assigns follow)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

[very hopeful at this point)

ISSUE: Head hitting the desk repeatedly.

"Error 1317: An error occurred while attempting to create the directory D:\Apps"

FINAL ATTEMPT: Write down my sad story here to hopefully get some help. I have not tried cacls.exe on the D: path yet, cause I don't feel like trying to until someone says I should (do you really think that is the the issue?). My machine was perfect until Friday, 2004-07-09. Now I have no Acrobat and I use it everyday. Feeling like wiping my harddrive (God help me). I really appreciate any informed help I can get, this is ruining my week.

Sincerely,

Chris Tauff

The issue has been fixed. For reasons I don't quite understand, I was missing the directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents

I found reference to this issue in these forums on an unrelated but similar sounding issue. When I created this folder, and gave permission for "Everyone" to view it on the Security Tab for the folder's properties, the installation of Acrobat Reader 6.01 went off without a hitch. I will uninstall this and reinstall Acrobat 5.0 later. I hope this help someone facing a similar issue.
