Discussion:
Acrobat 9 Export to Word Crashes or Corrupt
(too old to reply)

I downloaded Acrobat 9 Pro to evaluate before upgrading from 8.1.

If I Export a PDF to Word, it converts the doc and looks fine until I get to the last two pages of the Doc file. Then it locks up Word (every time).

If I try to batch Export Multiple Files, it converts one or two files, then crashes Acrobat. The files it does convert are corrupted just as the ones done singly.

About one out of three converted Word files will not open at all. I get a file corrupt error from Word.

It seems the conversion is not finishing for some reason because all is well until the last two pages in the Word file.

What could be causing this?

Thanks,
Jim

How are you creating the PDF - by printing to Adobe PDF printer or by using the Acrobat's PDFMaker button/menu on Word?

Hello Abhigyan,
I did not create the PDFs that I am trying to export. So, I do not know how they were created.

These are software manuals for earlier versions of our product, and we do not have the Word source files.

Thanks,
Jim

If the WORD export will not work, you might try an HTML export and open that in WORD. Sometimes that does the job as a work around.

Thanks for your reply Bill.

I did try HTML. It looses most of the formatting and does weird things with the tables. I can accomplish the same thing or better using File-Save As to Word using Acrobat 8.1.

Acrobat 9.0 was "supposed" to salvage the formatting. That is why I was attempting to use it.

I guess I'll just go back to Acrobat 8.

Thank you,
Jim

The success of exporting a PDF to Word is very dependent on how the original file was created and "if" it was tagged. Do you know what application was used to create the PDF? Have you tried tagging the PDF to improve the export process? Does your PDF contain any complex tables and or rotated pages? There features are complex and can create difficulties when exported to Word especially if the PDF is not tagged.

Thanks for your reply:

Your question prompted me to look, and I see the files were created using Jaws PDF Creator. Probably not a good thing.

Yes, some files do contain complex tables, and some are rotated.

I tagged one file to test and it worked pretty well. It placed everything in frames or text boxes. But I removed them and it looks pretty good.

The only difference I see in tagged and not tagged is the tables convert better.

All in all, it appears that Acrobat 9 does nothing more for you than Acrobat 8 did regarding file conversion to Word.

The ultimate fix for my problem was to uninstall Acrobat 9. Now my Word files do not freeze.

Has there been a resolution to this issue?

I just purchased Acrobat 9, personally, no previous versions owned personally.

When I export a file that is 3,392KB to start. The resulting comes out at 5,897KB. If I try to go to the last page, Word locks up.

If I add a new relatively small image to the header (23KB) and save the file grows to 184,576KB.

Have you tried adjusting the Export to Word settings in A9? There is a new one called "Retain Flowing Text" that might produce different results.
