Can you help. I do not have Adobe Acrobat. I use the free Adobe Reader.

Is it possible to highlight parts of the text using Adobe Reader?

What do you mean "highlight parts of the text using Adobe Reader" ?
Do you mean permanently ?

The fact is if it is was created from a word processor you can "highlight" text to copy
the text.

What are you trying to accomplish ?

I wish to permanently pick out text in a PDF which I think is important.

I want to highlight it so it looks like I have used a yellow highlighter.

Can I do that with Adobe Reader?

Highlighting is one of those features reserved for Acrobat.

You can use other PDF readers to do this.

Foxit Reader, for example. Similarly, Nuance PDF Reader.

Google will find you both.

You can do this with Reader if the document was created with Comments
enabled. If you know someone with Acrobat, they can change the
document so you can highlight it in Reader.

Two methods to accomplish highlighting of PDFs:

1. Free Foxit reader (or some other software that I am not aware of).
2. Adobe Reader, after the PDF is 'enabled for commenting' using
Acrobat X Professional. It is very straightforward and takes a few
seconds. Read more here: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/WS8F17CB6D-B39D-4cf6-8060-7907C1AC53F7.w.html

Foxit Reader, Nitro PDF Reader, PDF X-Change Viewer are alternatives
worth looking at.

Adobe Reader X actually now provides the ability to highlight text in
the document (without the need for 'enabling' the PDF). Some of these
free alternatives may have forced their hand ;-)
